Release of XP Service Pack 3 was expected this week but put on hold due to a compatibility issue with one of Microsoft's retail application packages.
The company has found a glitch between Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1 and the point-of-sale software, Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System. The company said it plans to "put filtering in place to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Dynamics RMS.
Once that happens, XP SP3 will be released to Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft said.
Microsoft gave no time frame for when the issue would be resolved but said the fix is "in testing."
XP SP3 was released to manufacturing last week.
